Stereotactic Radiosurgery - NovalisStereotactic body radiosurgery has emerged as a new treatment option for patients with metastasis located within and adjacent to vertebral bodies/spinal cord. Standard multifraction radiotherapy may provide less durable clinical response since the total dose is limited by the tolerance of the spinal cord. Recent technological advances in imaging, 3-dimensional localization, immobilization devices, and radiation delivery have allowed higher degree of accuracy while sparing normal surrounding tissue. These advances have made stereotactic body radiosurgery an attractive alternative as treatment course is shorter (between 1-5 treatments) and allows delivery of higher biologic equivalent dose thus providing better tumor control. The same technological advances have also allowed treatment of liver and lung metastasis as well as medically inoperable early stage lung cancer.
